My son loves Minecraft and loves minecraft with plugins.

I want to build a server that:

    - 3 people can use
    - will be compatible with a good percentage of the bukkit plugins
    - won't cost me much.

I have a few Pentium 4 boxes and can try to throw about 2gb of ram in them.

What Opeating System is best for doing something like this that won't take up
most of the resources running the OS.

I have tried Windows xp, 7 and MineOS. Windows just felt like it was using most of the ram and
minecraft wasn't running quite right. I tried MineOS but it wouldn't run some of the plugins.

Just trying to get some thoughts...Thanks

The plugins doesn't depend on the operating system. If your OS serves Java, and you are able to host your server. Then all of the plugins will work as well... Even on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, or MineOS!

2GB are enough for a "small" 3-slot server with a few plugins IMHO.

Ok. My son asked for 3 different plugins and only 1 of them actualy worked on MineOs.

Not sure what I could be doing wrong. I read posts that mineos doesn't support all plug-ins for whatever reason.

Then i guess you made something wrong... Can you tell me the name of those plugins? At least if the plugin is not one that works with proprietary methods, all plugins should work on all OS.

@CrazyxMink3y This is all local on a gigabit network. So cool I will look at Ubuntu and OpenSUSE

The reason why that plugin didn't worked is really simple.

It's outdated and won't work for current bukkit builds.

You can see the version the plugin was made for in the square brackets after the plugin name in the Forums (where you already found that "Drill" one). But your Linux OS isn't the problem. It would work for you too ;)

A protip: Always look for plugins on http://plugins.bukkit.org/curseforge/. Thats the best place to search and explore plugins.

Unfortunatly thats a bad example for showing you.

Lets take a look a look at another Plugin. WorldGuard for example.

On the right you'll have the "Facts" category, in there is the compatible version as well:

    No, that is not correct.

That field is more of a "Its been tested to work on this version." However, consider plugins like Minequery - its old, deprecated, and not encouraged to be used anymore. However, it works.

Best way to know for sure is to run the plugin on a test server.

    That makes sense.

Thanks again everyone. I was able to find versions of the plugins he wants to work with bukkit/minecraft on mineos crux.

    Thanks
