All I really want is a place to spill my helpful tutorials without it getting lost in the "OMG WHY IT NO WORK?!" threads... And I don't want to learn how to use the WikiCreole or whatever it's called...

We're all talking about BukkitWiki powered by MediaWiki's Wikitext right? Also, you don't need to learn Wikitext to post to BukkitWiki, We have a rich text editor.

*shrugs* I've just been looking more at the Plugin Dev resources and that seems to be working better then anything on the wiki at this time.

EDIT: also, how many leaves are there in MineCraft? I guess I might as well apply for this Wiki thing, I'll let this thread run another few hours before I request it locked.

    @TnT,

Would it be possible to try it out? If it works fine, we can continue to debate over it, and if it doesn't work, so be it.

EDIT: Like just put a sticky thread in Bukkit Help, for say, a week? See how things go.

We could always do away with it.

    Anyone else agree?

    Look at this: http://forums.bukkit.org/forums/resources.60/

It's a user-created compilation of helpful tips/advice/tutorials on how to make/design plugins. I want the same thing but for Bukkit Help.

As a server owner I would much rather read a forum post than a wiki page.

Also, the wiki could still be a source for some information as it is with the plugin development section, there's some useful information on developing plugins there, but the bulk of the useful resources are in the resources subforum.

    I feel the same way.
Also, when troubleshooting information already provided, I find it easier to discuss on the forums then trying to communicate through a wiki.

That seems counter intuitive. You would rather read instructions from a forum post that only one person can update which may not be updated, over a wiki which multiple people can contribute to? As for the accuracy of the information, a single author does not guarantee that either.

On the matter of trouble shooting, yes a wiki is not the best medium for that.

Yes, the forum way does have some downfalls, but I keep mentioning how well the Plugin Dev-Resources has worked.

The whole thing loops back onto internet psychology. Many people read the wiki, that's true, but the information there can only take you so far. Forum threads are vastly more popular for newcomers and information seekers because one can relate to others. Many people have different needs; for example, while one person may be at home with a batch script to run there server, another may require a one-click executable to do the same task.
Forums also offer more ways of solving an issue, or help to setup something than a wiki could ever have. A wiki does give help, I agree, but most of this comes from a select group's point of view; that is, people who know exactly what they're taking about. To a lot of people, the content on the wiki is more than understandable, but it can be as legible as another language to some. That's why a forum is more useful in a huge environment like Bukkit, because it allows people with similar capabilities to help each other. Creating a resources post, with tutorials and software would be highly beneficial.
I'm not saying that you have to let everyone be able to post on this page. Rather, if you don't like that, you could allow a select group to be in charge of providing the community with tutorials and the such. I've seen @Sayshal and @codename_B around helping a lot, so they may be able to provide a base for this.
The idea of the database is also a good one. If it was implemented in a way similar to GetSatisfaction, then the help section would no longer be flooded with arbitrary talks, as it would link a person straight to the article they need, as well as giving other similar responses as well.
So while I can see why @TnT doesn't agree with the implementation of a resources section, it would be a benefit to not only the community, but to the moderators and other staff who constantly have to sift through the help forum to cut out and lock double posts and respond to a million and one questions with the exact same thing. This will free up more space for those who actually need help, or have a question that has not been asked before.
    Kindly,
    ImminentFate

Well, it's now up to @TnT to decide. If he says no, please lock this thread.

Seeing as he's not an administrator I doubt he even has the power to do this kind of thing, and is just here to argue. :p

He's in control of the Bukkit Help section, if he doesn't have the power to make it himself, he has the power to get it happening. But it seems he's no longer replying to the thread.

Staff, I guess this will never happen so please lock it. @mbaxter @TnT

Not so much ignoring it, and a few good points are made in this thread.

I am not so convinced this doesn't shift the problem elsewhere, rather than improving on the situation. At this time, we will not add a new subforum for resources, however, that isn't to say we won't revisit this more once the Bukkit Docs project gets further underway.
