nice. i cant wait to see how this evolves as a rookie modder i am also eagerly awaiting the api and ability to port my modloader mod to (or re-write it for) this new system, and i cant wait to see what other people will do. this is going to be awesome. thanks for doing this...

one question: will the client be able to cache or 'keep' in any way the mods for use in single player games? like if my buddies like my new equipment and items and want to use them in their own worlds how will that work/will it be possible? and what about modded clients connecting? im thinking optifog/optimine/glsl shaders and things like that...or bigger/game changing mods like claysoldiers or the aether? will the client have to keep separate minecraft.jars for single/online play?

The specifics have not been worked out entirely, but for SP, the copy of the mod that you use to start the world will be "attached" to the SP world, so if both players are using SpoutCraft, there will be an easy way to "download" a zip of the world and "load" the zip of another players world. Those containers will contain the mods needed to run the world.

Client mods won't have direct jar access, but we'll be sure to expose a lot of low level hooks so the client can be totally rewritten. In cases where things can't really be rewritten (Optifog), the main features will be directly incorporated into SpoutCraft.

sounds awesome. i pray that there will be support (of simply compatibility) for my beloved glsl shaders too...i dont know if i could live without them at this point. i know that most of my buddies cant live without using optifog/mine as well (its the only thing that keeps most of them above 20 fps) so if the plan is to incorporate those things into the client side of spout that is great news.

The best way to make sure that the features you want get incorporated is to help us when we begin development of the client side system, in 1-2 weeks. We accept almost all pull requests, assuming they are within the project scope and fairly cleanly formatted.

Feature request for SpoutCraft:
Have the SpoutCraft client cache previous Minecraft client versions whenever a update occurs (diff'd to save space?) . Then, when connecting to a server, SpoutCraft would check the servers Minecraft version to see if it is the same/compatible with the version running. If it isn't, SpoutCraft will check the cache of previous versions, and restart/reconnect using the correct one if it is found, or display the usual outdated version error if it is not found in the cache.

This would be the simplest, most elegant way of handling the players updating before the server is ready problem, and fully comply with Notch's requirement of not redistributing the older clients, while still allowing different server admins the ability to update exactly when they and the plugins they use are ready, while letting players not have to worry about what version the server is running (as long as that version was installed on their system at some point).

Spoutcraft is the client mod and usually you would use the Spoutcraft Launcher to download and update it. You can always install development builds if you'd like as well.

if you go to the dev builds link, it's Spoutcraft. There is a launcher being made that will do it for you, but they are having some technical difficulties getting it running.

If I recall correctly, plugin developers were given a way to download Bukkitcontrib automatically for their plugin if needed. I'd guess that you have one of those plugins installed and they haven't updated for Spout just yet.
