I would love to host a server with my friends and all, but my dad doesn't think it is safe, I have tried offering hamachi, but not knowing enough about it tough to accept, as we have had people try to get our information via internet. So yeah, is portfowarding safe? If not, what about hamachi? Thanks
How exactly does portfowarding work? Just the sound of it sounds unsafe? I really want to host a server for my friends, but I have to have all the facts.
I'm pretty sure it make you vulnerable to attacks with that port but I will watch thread to see what some people say.
This isn't knowing all the facts as you do not need to know things that are irrelevant to your initial question. It is safe. That is all you need to know. That is wrong. You are always vulnerable to UDP floods.
You don't need to be hostile, but I need to know how it works in order for my dad to allow me to do it. As he is a lawyer, he looks for every possible flaw, and attacks me on it, I have to be able to defend it
Okay what port forwarding does it let's the minecraft server (25565)( <-- that's the port for minecraft) contact your router freely.
I apologize if I sound hostile, it's how I normally talk. Just find a guide corresponding to your Router on how to forward ports to individual IPs on the LAN, (in essence, port forwarding) and you'll be all set to do it. Ports are always open to the public (or forwarded), just your Router "blocks" them because it does not know which user of the LAN should actually receive the incoming connection. If you forward it, you just tell it which computer actually receives the incoming connection, in this case being the Minecraft connection that allows you to connect to your server.
XD wow, I seem like a little kid... But yeah, my dad still doesn't think it's safe, he wont let me, so yeah, anyway I hope he will end up letting me. I know it's safe.
Port forwarding can be unsafe, however if you are just forwarding 25565 and nothing else, you should be fine. The danger in port forwarding is for example allowing people to remotely log onto your computer by forwarding the remote desktop port (for Windows this is 3389) or making your computer the DMZ, meaning all traffic without a destination gets forwarded to your computer. Since no other services on your computer would use utilize port 25565 and there are no known (AFAIK) methods of taking over a computer using the Minecraft server, this is a safe port to forward.
