You can't apply for it as an individual - the company has to prove they have a need for it.

I personally can see myself not liking this. In the next 5 years, the price will certainly be much cheaper and I would hate that because then everyone's websites would be "www.main/forum/rules/etc.minecraftservernamehere" instead of the normal "www.myminecraftservernamehere.com"

Sub-domains are enough. I prefer the original TLD's because you know what website you're going into. "co.uk" - European site. ".gov" - US Government site.. You don't need www.craft.bukkit. Just make craft.bukkit.com

EDIT: You can change the "www" to something for a sub-domain, and soon you will be able to change the "com/net/org/gov/co.uk/etc."? No thanks. I don't want to see adresses like: http://build860.craft.bukkit/

Yeah this whole thing is a huge scam, so ICANN can make a ton more money.

Technically there was never a reason to restrict the names. Strings are strings. As long as it can be resolved, you could even have TLDs that actually point to a server.

    http://minecraft/download.jsp.

What ugly URLs those would be.

Too the poster above, it isn't a single domain registration. It's a actual suffix ending, meaning if you were a large domain seller like namecheap.com, you could make your own suffix for your company. Or be a country person and purchase your country their own suffix!

Could also have fun if you're a millionaire:

    www.fbi.nk

    nk = north korea lelelel

I think it's mostly designs for huge companies like Apple.

    For example, www.iphone.apple
    www.food.tesco
    www.windows.microsoft
    etc.

It only looks bad because we're used to the convential two/three letter long TLDs such as org, com etc.

Also, just to correct @ethood1999 , .co.uk is a UK-based company. Not European.

You wouldn't use the dot if there's no subdomain.

No, just typing in google will NOT work, or www.google because of the simple argument:
Can you type in just "com"? Or "www.com"? There's your answer.

@tips48 sure! domains are on me :D

    Yes, you can: http://www.com/
"www" is a completely valid domain to register under any TLD, so you may not be able to type just "com" you can type www.com

WWW is just a common "web server" name. It is widely known and accepted but not required.

It's more of a business thing. Like say I have multiple servers running under my domain. I'd have one whose hostname is www.rarobertson.net which would be the web server. Then another that is say, irc.rarobertson.net which is an IRC server. Even if the servers are physically one computer, the naming distinction helps see what's happening in log files and other places.
