    How much Ram does running a bukkit server use? I was wondering. Because I wanted to buy a cheap computer to run a server on 24/7..

    A minecraft server can operate relatively well with ~1GB of RAM, but your biggest limiting factors for performance will likely be a combination of network conditions (the average home internet connection's upstream bitrate is pretty pitiful) and CPU speed. It might be more cost-effective to look into a VPS if you were contemplating buying a cheap PC simply to use as a server.

    This computer is like, 512 mb. So that isnt enough?

    The one I'm gonna buy for it

    @tylerb1997
    512mb will probably not even work for 1 player.

    Or enough for java to run fully, for that matter...

    Is this a computer in your house?

    And 1gb would be just fine for a normal server.

    Better off buying a minecraft server from a hosting company.
    considering you're going to be sharing your bandwidth with the server, and you're on a home connection I doubt your going to be able to run a server without lag, and with 512mb of RAM shared with running the OS.

    If you're australian,
    Moltenhosting.net.au

    Just throwing it out there.

    I'm suprised how little upload bandwidth it takes per person... I'd say 100kbps / person... so many home connections would probably handle it... the problem for residential connections I know is the constant bandwidth usually goes over people's limits... with 10ish people online average on my server it transfered 1.5TB of data in one month.

    So not true. I was running a 10 player server on HALF THAT. It only crashed when I got Multiverse on there.

    Yep. Although I'll admit, it crashed once in a while when someone overdid the flying (flying was allowed). But it never lagged.

    I suppose the default for most server companies for 10 slot servers is 512mb of ram, you could run it off 256 but with no plugins if you were running bukkit.

    Beastnode has 1-12 player slot with 384mb... that can't be true then can it?

    I mean plugins don't take too much up, only about 4.6 mb for mine...
